Ford is strategically leveraging its rich history by reintroducing familiar nameplates in the electric vehicle (EV) era, where distinguishing through technical superiority is increasingly challenging amidst a surge of new EV start-ups from China and elsewhere.
The newly revealed Ford Capri e-SUV measures 4,634mm in length, 2,063mm in width, and 1,626mm in height, with a kerb weight ranging from 2,023kg to 2,115kg, depending on the specification. It closely matches the Volkswagen ID.5, sharing the same platform.
In contrast to the straight-edged, two-box silhouette of the Explorer e-SUV, influenced heavily by Ford’s American heritage, the Capri adopts a sleeker, more aerodynamic design. This gives it the appearance of a high-riding sedan rather than a traditional SUV, resembling the aesthetic of the Polestar 2.
The Capri is built on the Volkswagen Group’s MEB architecture, like the Explorer, and offers two powertrain options: a 286hp single rear motor achieving 0-100kph in 6.4 seconds, or a 340hp twin-motor setup reaching 0-100kph in 5.3 seconds. The lower-powered variant features a 77kWh (usable) battery, providing up to 627km of range (WLTP) and charging at up to 135kW. The Premium range-topper increases the capacity to 79kWh for up to 592km and can be charged at rates up to 185kW. For comparison, the Explorer offers 600km or 530km, respectively, highlighting the Capri’s more aerodynamic profile.
Visually, the Capri stands out with a bespoke front end featuring distinctive LED headlights reminiscent of the Mk3 Capri, and a wraparound contrasting grille. The rear receives a similar treatment, adding a touch of retro appeal.
Inside, the Capri’s cockpit is similar to the Explorer’s, featuring a 14.6-inch central touchscreen that slides backward to reveal a hidden storage cubby, a 17-litre ‘megaconsole’ between the front seats, and a foldable boot floor offering up to 527 litres of storage space. One-piece sports seats and a squared-off steering wheel emphasize its performance-oriented design. "Inside, I think this is exactly how an original Capri driver would have expected the future to feel," said Ford Europe design chief Amko Leenarts, who led the Capri's redesign.
While Ford currently does not sell cars in India, there are plans for a return with the Everest SUV.
