Skoda Auto has announced a delay in the launch of its Enyaq EV in India to 2025, opting for a significant facelift and design update before its debut. This strategic move aligns with Skoda’s localization efforts to make the EV more affordable for Indian consumers by manufacturing it domestically at its Pune facility. Skoda aims to capture a 5% share of India’s automotive market with its growing lineup of electric and ICE vehicles.

Major Facelift for the Enyaq EV

The Enyaq EV, Skoda's European best-seller, was initially set for a 2024 launch in India. However, Skoda Auto Brand Director Petr Janeba shared that the company has postponed its debut to incorporate a comprehensive facelift slated for March 2025, which will showcase Skoda’s latest design language. “One of the best-selling EVs in Europe is our Enyaq," Janeba noted. "We tested and prepared the car for India but decided to delay the launch to ensure the latest version hits the market."

Production and Localization at Pune Facility

Skoda plans to manufacture the Enyaq EV at its Pune plant, where it has ramped up production capacity to 250,000 units annually, with further expansion planned based on demand. This manufacturing hub will allow Skoda to deepen localization of the Enyaq and other EVs, aiming to make them more affordable for Indian customers. “In the same factory in Pune, Chakan, we’ll be producing EVs to meet both domestic and export demand,” said Janeba.

Aligning with India’s Regulatory Landscape

Skoda is carefully navigating India’s evolving EV policies, especially the upcoming CAFE3 (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) standards in 2027. Janeba emphasized the importance of stable policies to encourage long-term investment and highlighted the challenges posed by varying state-level EV and hybrid tax policies. The company remains committed to adapting its strategy for India, balancing affordability with regulatory compliance.

Skoda’s Broader Commitment to India

Piyush Arora, CEO of Skoda Auto India, underscored the brand’s investment in local engineering talent, dealer networks, and suppliers. Skoda’s technical center in India has been instrumental in developing models like the Kodiaq, fully designed domestically, showcasing India’s engineering strength and Skoda’s commitment to a long-term vision in the region. Additionally, the company is targeting India’s competitive sub-four-metre SUV segment, which accounts for about 30% of the market, with an expanded product lineup.

With these strategic initiatives, Skoda is not only preparing for a successful Enyaq launch but also cementing its place in India’s growing EV and automotive markets.
